Seltúnshverir

Seltúnshverir welcomes visitors with a small mud pot in the east near the parking lot. It is merely a forerunner of bigger things to come.

Far more impressing is the next cluster of springs and mud pots. The pictures show first the muddy hot spring complex, then two neighboring sub-clusters of mud pots.

On the other side of the trail further springs and fumaroles are located in a depression, which fascinates with its intensive color contrasts of the soil.

Subsequently the trail leads uphill where discharging water of the hot springs has shaped two mountain slopes like ancient greek theatres. In the first basin muddy hot water is bubbling, hissing and steaming through many different vents.

The second basin in the south is somewhat less active, but shows a larger hot pool in the center. On top of the southern basin an observation platform is mounted, providing a stunning view over Seltún.

Completing the loop trail you walk across a wavy area with especially colorful rhyolite soil.
